IPJ News – Although the US welcomed Herman van Rompuy as the first permanent European Council President, there has been some dismay at the choice.
Turkish member of parliament Onur Oymen said he was concerned about what Van Rompuy’s presidency could mean for Turkey’s aspirations to join the EU.
According to EU Observer on its independent Web site from Brussels, Van Rompuy said in 2004 that he strongly opposed Turkey’s EU accession.
