The future of Indonesia’s journalism

by Gugik

Indonesia is in the verge of transformation from print to online news. The number of newspaper subscriber’s keeps decreasing and the page viewers are increasing gradually. However there are still many problems occur in Indonesia regarding this condition.

The people tend to use internet for other purposes and not the news. Most of the people in the countries access the internet to open facebook for example and the news page is very remote to them.

I personally see the situation every where and the one look at the news is the person who desperately needs it. The slow internet access also made the people reluctant to read the news online.

Journalists also still have their mind onto to the print media. The work habit they have been doing since a long time ago.

“I’m a journalist so I only write down the news. I don’t need to be bothered by something complicated like using the internet and others,” said Wira Sanjiwani, a reporter of Bali Post.

So the problems that Indonesia face is not only on technology but also the culture of the people where they still think and work based on what they do on the print one. It maybe need a while to get to the point where print and online journalism work together, hand in hand, in Indonesia
