The internet has had a negative impact on the newspaper industry in Indonesia. Readership has continued to decline; while circulation figures have either remained the same or continued to fall. Even now, many analysts fear that the end of print media is near with the introduction of the internet in the mid 1990s.
Most Indonesians believe that the big newspaper corporations have almost gone. This belief could have been circumvented by the fact that the internet is now so easily accessible; especially with the introduction of smartphones such as I-Phone and Blackberry, whereby online access to news readily available.
However, the print media in Indonesia will never become obsolete. One obvious reason is the fact that newspapers still offer readers in-depth coverage of current issues that are important to Indonesians. Furthermore, print publications usually offer an accurate and balanced form of reporting.
Surprisingly, according to the survey conducted by the World Association of Newspapers; newspaper circulation figures have increased by 11.67% over the past five years. In fact, circulation figures grew by 2% in 2007.
Currently, almost all print media in Indonesia have gone online to utilize the internet as a major mass medium. Consequently, some of them have even managed to make a profit by doing so as these companies realise the value of advertising; which is really the factor that is driving internet growth.

Good story to defend print media with arguments and facts.
I am just a bit bothered with this sentence “Most Indonesians believe that the big newspaper corporations have almost gone.”
And oh, the last paragraph makes the story lose the focus I guess. `
Interesting story, specially when it supported with a relevant data. But I agree with Iwan that sentence of “Most Indonesians believe that ..” is not good to raised. Most of them still believe that reading newspaper is still necessary, specially when they have feeling and connection reading newspaper.
nice story, but I am bothered in the last paragraph, especially the 1st sentence. I think newspaper is rarely extend to online. Only big newspaper in the city extend to online. How about local newspapers, it is very limited.
